My most recent absence, has been for such a joyful occasion. No, not the Christmas holiday to be spent with family (rocked that dinner by the way) but for the ever more present holiday event, Rio de Janeiro.

This was my first time in Brazil, and it was much more advanced then I suspected it to be. The intertwining jutted mountains that evanesce to the favelas. The mix of people both racially and socially is impressive, especially in that of a South American country.

I wanted to get an idea of what the  people there ate, yet going around the  city we had a lot of run-ins with varied  buffets styles of buffet. The more popular ones, for economic convenience, were the buffet by kilo places, where you would get an option from various dishes to plate yourself and weigh/pay at the end.

Although my favorite kind of buffet, were the churrasquerias, something so holy you can smell it from miles away. It’s a certain special place, where they walk around with different cuts of meat on swords, hot and perfectly tender, they also sport a very complete salad bar, that serves seafood, black beans and rice (Brazilian staple), and even varied native cheese. The further down south you get in Brazil, the better the meat for the churrasco, because you’re getting closer to Uruguay and Argentina.

We stayed on Copacabana beach, near the infamous Copacabana palace. We stopped in and ordered some drinks a few times, I was surprised to see a spicy cocktail on the menu elaborated with cayenne pepper, the pepper of choice in Brazil. Maracuyá (Passion fruit) and burnt lemonade made the drink confusingly refreshing, perfect for someone who likes to keep their peers and taste buds on their toes.

I had the chance to try some ambrosial craft beer with my sister. Colorado brewery opened in the year 1995, stationed in a town north of São Paulo, they owe their unique flavor to their home grown ingredients and the Guarany aquifer. They have a pale ale and dark ale with molasses along with a pilsner designed with manioc. We had the pleasure of trying their dark coffee beer, and the lighter orange honey (mel de laranja) beers they offer.

The coffee beer was strong with a potent smoke flavor that dissolved into a sugary layer of bubbles swishing in your mouth, whilst the honey beer was soothing taste, with flower and vanilla notes.

I also had the pleasure, and somewhat discorded excitement, at eating at the restaurant of Roberta Sudbrack, the first female chef who cooked for a Brazilian president. But that’s for the next post! Here the menu for a little teaser ;).
